I am researching Internet addiction, why you ask well because I want to learn
more about it and to understand why some people turn to the internet to escape
their problems. You see the internet can be used for good things and bad
things such as social media which could be good because you can talk to your
friends that you never see, and it can be bad because you use it to make
friends with people you have never met before. The internet should be
used, as well as everything else in moderation; yet there are still people who
addicted to
it.
In
my research I have found an article that was published on August 1, 2010 so
it isn't the most up to date article but I believe that it conveys
some very important points about internet addiction. Internet addiction
has not yet been identified as a disorder that is not included in the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM), but it is a common
disorder that deserves to be in the DSM-V. Throughout this article it is
trying to explain what causes internet addiction, it gives countless examples
of statistics from other sources. There are three different kinds of
internet addiction, excessive gaming, sexual preoccupations, and e-mail/ text
messaging. These all have things in common such as excessive use, feeling
negative emotions when they don’t have a computer, the need for new computer
equipment, poor achievement, social isolation, fatigue, and lying, etc.
There are some arguments were people say that internet addiction isn't a
disorder on its own but is a side effect of other disorders, such as ADHD,
anxiety and depression. In this article it said that people can become
addicted to the internet, because it provides a way to relieve stress.
This article also says that people who are addicted to the internet are also
have a higher probability with people who have social anxiety, and family
violence exposure. This is the article that I was summarizing :) http://ehis.ebscohost.com.byui.idm.oclc.org/ehost/detail?sid=0fe1d3b7-fb8a-40ea-8c60-76b1fcac6478%40sessionmgr110&vid=1&hid=103&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#db=aph&A
